Israel’s National Security Council (NSC) has issued an alert for Israelis abroad ahead of the third anniversary of the Hamas-led invasion of and massacre across southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, warning that Iran and its proxies could view the date as an opportunity to target Israelis and Jews overseas.
In a statement released on Tuesday, one day before the anniversary, the NSC warned of an elevated global risk of terrorist attacks targeting Israelis and Jews, urging them to exercise “heightened vigilance” as security concerns rise ahead of Oct. 7.
“Terrorist organizations, and particularly Iran and its proxies [including] Hamas, and Global Jihad factions, see this date as a significant milestone,” the statement read.
The NSC urged Israelis and Jews to avoid destinations under its highest Level 4 travel warning, including Jordan, Qatar, Somaliland, and Egypt, as well as the Sinai Peninsula, citing particularly severe security threats in those areas.
The NSC also cautioned Israelis against posting details of their travel plans or movements abroad on social media in advance, warning that publicly sharing such information could make them more vulnerable to attacks.
Jews and Israelis were also encouraged to refrain from speaking Hebrew in crowded places, stay away from demonstrations, and avoid large gatherings, particularly in locations where tensions are elevated.
“Do not post on social media [any] content that reflects your service in the security forces [including the Israel Defense Forces and police],” the statement said.
According to the Israeli Ministry for Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism, 262 anti-Israel protests and events have been identified across 37 countries, with the United States, Spain, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Italy expected to see the highest number of demonstrations.
Authorities have identified roughly one-third of the planned events as posing a medium or high security risk, with 45 or more protests expected near Israeli embassies, consulates, and other Israeli-linked sites drawing particular concern.
Since the beginning of the war in Gaza, security forces have intercepted several attacks on Israeli targets worldwide and uncovered Hamas-linked terrorist networks operating in countries such as Denmark, Germany, Bulgaria, and Sweden.
Over the past year, authorities have foiled several Iran-led terrorist plots targeting Israeli diplomatic missions and Jewish interests in countries such as Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Belgium, underscoring the persistent threat of Iranian-backed attacks against Israelis and Jewish communities abroad.
Officials also said there have been efforts by Iranian terrorist groups to engage with Israeli citizens abroad, aiming to harm or abduct them.
