On Aug. 5, 2026, the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah came under renewed threat after two Israeli soldiers were killed while clearing Hezbollah infrastructure in the southern Lebanese town of Majdal Zoun. Four other IDF soldiers were wounded.

Israel responded with targeted strikes against Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon, killing one person and wounding 12 others.

A fragile ceasefire has been in place along Israel’s northern border since June 19, when Israel and the Iran-backed terror group agreed to a truce following the collapse of earlier attempts to halt the fighting. The latest round of hostilities began on March 2, when Hezbollah attacked Israel on behalf of its patron, the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Since taking effect, the ceasefire has faced repeated strain. Hezbollah has reportedly violated it numerous times, including on the day after it began, prompting Israeli military responses.

In this case, it remains unclear whether the soldiers were killed by a Hezbollah explosive device that had been left in place and detonated when they encountered it, or whether a Hezbollah operative triggered it remotely. The latter scenario would constitute a far more serious and deliberate violation of the ceasefire.

The possibility that the fatal explosion was caused by an older device left behind by Hezbollah cannot be ruled out. However, the incident follows two similar explosions involving Hezbollah ordnance and the Lebanese military.

On July 18, one Lebanese soldier was killed and two others were wounded when a Hezbollah explosive device detonated. On Aug. 2, a Lebanese military transport vehicle drove over another Hezbollah device, wounding five soldiers.

As the Alma Research and Education Center noted, the incidents may simply reflect Hezbollah’s reckless practice of leaving explosive ordnance scattered across southern Lebanon, endangering Lebanese soldiers and civilians who could inadvertently trigger it.

However, the Israeli think tank also raised a more troubling possibility: that the incidents involving the Lebanese Army were deliberate warnings from Hezbollah. Under this interpretation, the terror group was threatening the Lebanese state not to interfere with its activities while attempting to sabotage ongoing talks between Israel and Lebanon.

The latest explosion involving Israeli soldiers may fit either explanation. It could be another consequence of Hezbollah’s reckless deployment and abandonment of explosive devices throughout southern Lebanon. Alternatively, it could represent a deliberate attempt by the terror group to disrupt cooperation between Israeli and Lebanese authorities seeking to curb its power.

If the latter explanation is correct, a critical question remains: Will Hezbollah succeed in sabotaging the ceasefire and inflicting further suffering on southern Lebanon, or will the Lebanese state and international observers finally undertake the monumental task of permanently disarming Iran’s powerful Lebanese proxy?
