A mural in Italy depicting Holocaust victim and diarist Anne Frank and Italian Holocaust survivor and writer Primo Levi was vandalized with antisemitic graffiti recently, The Algemeiner has learned.
The mural was created by Italian contemporary artist AleXsandro Palombo to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day and is displayed on the wall of the Montello Barracks in Milan. Frank and Levi are portrayed seated opposite one another as they both look up to a sky filled with yellow Stars of David. Across the sky is the message: “Memory Is No Longer Enough.” Vandals covered the phrase and painted the words “ZIONIST SETTLER NAZIS.” Levi’s face was also defaced.
Italy’s Ambassador to Italy Jonathan Peled condemned the antisemitic vandalism in a post on X.
“Vandalizing a place symbolic of the memory of Anne Frank and Primo Levi means attacking the remembrance of the Shoah and our collective duty to never forget,” he wrote. “Antisemitic hatred, in all its forms, must be rejected with clarity and responsibility. Memory is a commitment that no hateful graffiti can erase.”
Levi’s face on the same mural was vandalized in February mere days after the artwork was unveiled, The Algemeiner previously reported.
Over the years, many of Palombo‘s murals related to the Holocaust have been vandalized, including those featuring Levi, Frank, and Holocaust survivors Liliana Segre, Sami Modiano and Edith Bruck. Several of them have since been acquired by Rome’s Holocaust Museum and are now displayed outside the Portico d’Ottavia, in the city’s former Jewish Ghetto.
